Here are a few ways to reduce your carbon footprint and help save the planet!
- Drive only if you have to:
As we all know, vehicles contribute to a majority of the air pollution due to the burning of fossil fuels and harmful gases. For the betterment of our planet we could try reducing the use of our cars and choosing an alternate way to get around. Like, if you need to go somewhere that’s fairly close to you, taking a slightly long walk is a great way to go where you need to and it’s a great form of exercise. Choosing to opt for public transport is another way to travel because it’s definitely better than sitting in traffic for god-knows how long.
2. Consider eating meat once a week
A lot of people aren’t aware of the fact that animal agriculture and meat consumption on a large scale can affect climate change. If we consider the limit of our intake of meat, it can make a huge difference to the environment. Red meat is particularly to blame, consuming 11 times more water and producing 5 times more emissions than its poultry counterparts. You don’t have to become a vegetarian, but eating meat less frequently will significantly help the environment.
3. Unplug your devices
Did you know electronics consume power when plugged in, even if they are powered down? This is known as Vampire power or standby power and it’s one of the biggest contributors to electricity wastage across the world. Every time a cord is plugged into a socket, it’s drawing energy, so although your device isn’t charging, you’re still contributing to your carbon footprint. A simple solution to this would be to leave your electronics unplugged at all times, unless you’re actively using them.
4. Consider planting more greens around you
As we all know, plants absorb carbon dioxide and give out oxygen, so planting a few greens would be an easy way to reduce your carbon footprint. It doesn’t have to be a huge task but maybe you and a couple friends could plant a new tree in your building or make a pact to grow a few plants in your balcony or house. Making little changes like these go a long way when all of us do them.
5. Carry a cloth bag wherever you go
A really easy way to cut down on your plastic use is by carrying a cloth bag wherever you go. Plastic bags are some of the worst pollutants because they don’t degrade naturally and are often dumped in landfills to be burnt. Cloth bags are a lot more durable and you can even customize them to add a little flair.
Let’s face it; our planet is getting worse. Our air quality is the worse it’s ever been, our oceans more polluted than ever before and our consumption habits are extremely wasteful. The only way to turn this around is for each of us to do our little bit and spread the message. So try doing just a single thing in this list or do all of them, it’s your choice. But it’s high time we do something because there’s nowhere else to go.
