Pets make the best companions! From children to senior citizens, the joy and unconditional love you receive from having a pet, can melt every heart. If you’re looking to add a four-legged member to your family, here’s what you need to know before bringing them home:
1) Are you ready?
When you adopt a pet, they become part of your family. The most important question to ask yourself is if you have enough time to devote towards a pet. Speak to your friends who already have pets to learn from their experiences. Adopting a pet is not very different from adopting a child. Consider the major life changes ahead of you like marriage, moving houses and make an informed decision accordingly.
2) Can you afford it?
While your total spend on food and provisions for your pet can vary, you will end up spending at least of INR 1,500-2,000 per month on them. This includes their food, litter (for cats) and vet bills. You definitely need to consider if you can sustain a livelihood for your future pet.
3) Whom to adopt?
Unconditional love comes in all shapes and sizes and of course, species. Depending on your lifestyle, choose between getting a cat or dog. Cats (especially when adopted in pairs) are low maintenance pets. They can be left alone for longer durations. Dogs/puppies need to be given more time and attention. It’s also important to spend some time with your “pet-to-be” before you adopt him/her or inquire about their personality to understand if it matches yours.
4) Adopt, don’t shop
When you adopt a stray animal as opposed to buying one, you’re not just giving a needy animal a home, you’re essentially saving a life. There are thousands of animals in shelters who desperately need homes. Here are some great NGOs to reach out to:
Mumbai: World For All
5) Where to adopt?
Get in touch with a local NGO to help you out with pet adoption. If you’re based in Mumbai, you must check out the World for All and Book a Smile Adoptathon 2017 on the 2nd and 3rd of December at St Theresa’s school, Bandra West. You can spend time with 180 animals who are looking for a family. This is Asia’s biggest adoption camp for stray animals and a great place to meet kittens and pups before you take them home.
